THERE IS A PLACE” to bring awareness to the power of music and memory loss

Kentfield, CA (June 2016) Windchime of Marin, a local memory care community, is hosting a private movie screening of the film “THERE IS A PLACE.” This 17 minute short documentary is about the power of music in the face of memory loss and loneliness. WindChime of Marin knows well the power of music and has brought music to each of its’ residents ears.

Every week, singer-songwriter Lior Tsarfaty visits 15-20 different Alzheimer’s care communities around the San Francisco Bay Area and has been a guest at WindChime of Marin. With a guitar and large drum strapped to each shoulder and a suitcase of percussion instruments in tow, he enters each facility where a circle of memory care residents sit and wait in sleepy silence. As Lior passes out instruments and leads the group in singing and drumming, smiles quickly spread, as neither residents nor staff can help but join in with their own unique expressions of song and dance.

THERE IS A PLACE follows Lior’s personal journey of falling in love with creating music and the call he answered to spread this gift of music in all directions. In doing so, he met with high demand from elderly care facilities. Lior’s sessions are crafted to foster a connection to self and to others, offering respite from common aging ills such as loneliness, confusion and isolation.

When individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia hear a melody connected with a meaningful memory, they can re-awaken. Many people who have not spoken in years find words and sing lyrics. They may regain the ability to converse and connect to those around them. The key is a personalized playlist. To make certain each resident had their own iPod, WindChime partnered with San Domenico school (K-12) located in San Anselmo for an iPod drive. The school often visits residents at WindChime and was excited to take part in collecting iPods for their friends at the community.

Emotions and musical memory are profoundly linked. Older memories are stored deeply in the brain. While Alzheimer’s damages the ability to recall facts and details, it does not destroy these lasting connections between a favorite song and memory of an important life event, no matter how long ago.

As a Music and Memory℠ certified program community, WindChime fully understands the difference that music makes to residents. WindChime is thrilled to have all its residents enjoying the music that brings joy to them. This documentary will help shed light on the subject.
