When is the right time to consider a memory care community for my loved one?
November 27, 2024
This is one of the most challenging questions families face, and unfortunately, there’s no simple answer. It’s a deeply personal and emotional decision, one that requires careful consideration of various options and costs.
In Marin County, this question is being asked more frequently, especially during the holiday season. As the population ages, it’s a reality that many individuals will experience declining health, and some will face the challenges of dementia.
At Windchime of Marin, we understand these challenges and have developed a range of solutions to support families through this process. For the past 24 years, we’ve earned our reputation as Marin's premier memory care community, proudly providing exceptional care to those living with dementia. We are committed to maintaining our high standards and supporting families with the best possible care.
Here are some of the common questions and concerns I hear from families on a regular basis.
- I made a promise to my mom, dad, or a family member that I would never place them in a facility.
- I’m looking for a place that feels like home, where my loved one will receive excellent care, as if they were still in their own home.
- The ability to garden is important so they need a space where they can enjoy the outdoors and stay connected with nature every day.
- Are they able to freely roam the building and grounds, so they don’t feel confined?
- Will they know where to go during the day and if not, will someone come to their room and help them?
- We want them to feel engaged to have activities during the day and what happens if they don’t want to be involved.
- My loved one loves music. Do you have music going on during the day?
- What is the staff-to-resident ratio? What training do staff have for dementia care? How often are staff trained?
- What medical services are available? What types of activities are available?
- How is resident safety prioritized? Is the facility secure for wandering residents?
- What is the cost of care? What services are included in the cost?
- What types of living arrangements are available? Are there private or semi-private rooms?
- What are the meals like?
- Are there visiting hours for families and visitors?
The questions and concerns I hear from families are both common and completely valid. It’s important that these concerns are addressed openly and thoroughly. Ultimately, the key question for any family to consider is: Is this environment a good fit for the potential resident, and is it the right choice for my family?
It's essential to visit as often as possible, ensuring that your loved one feels engaged, respected, and, most importantly, receives the attention they need from a skilled and compassionate team.
At Windchime of Marin, we understand this deeply. I’m here to provide the support you need by answering your questions and guiding you through this process. Whatever assistance you need. Having worked at Windchime of Marin for the past six years, I’m committed to helping you find the best solution for your family. Please call me. I’m happy to help.
